Generation and Destruction: On the Pursuit of Sonic Derealization
(undergraduate capstone project)

An exploration of the disposibility of mass media through sound and text. This project utilizes different modes of analog and digital distortion of sound and image in order to explore themes of media preservation, and lack thereof, in contemporary society.

The final form of the project encompasses 3 cassette tapes that have been designed to destroy the sounds on the loops within them over time, a text which "decays" as it is read, and a narrated video/animation of the preface and introduction of the book that is played alongside the tapes. Each tape is played over a tape recorder, which, alongside with the video signal, allow the presentation to have a participatory element, where the audience can manipulate the signals and frequencies which they hear, allowing every viewer to have their own unique experience with the work, depending on the time when which they encounter it and how they manipulate it.
